Yappr: Learn English by Watching Videos

Yappr
There are lots of video sharing websites but Yappr is the first one which has been designed specifically for learners of English. What makes all the difference is that the videos have subtitles (or translations) in English and you can replay phrases at the click of a button. You will also find notes explaining idioms and phrases that you don’t necessarily find in text books. There's a good selection of videos organised in categories (perhaps 'sexy' is one we could have done without) and if you register, you can chat with other Yapprs around the world or comment on videos. You can already edit translations and very soon you will be able to post, transcribe and translate videos yourself. This makes it a very interesting tool for teachers, who'll be able to put their own favourites online. In fact, Yappr promises to become the YouTube of English language learning.

12 Quick Tips To Search Google Like An Expert

  1. Explicit Phrase:
Lets say you are looking for content about internet marketing.  Instead of just typing internet marketing into the Google search box, you will likely be better off searching explicitly for the phrase.  To do this, simply enclose the search phrase within double quotes.
    Example: "internet marketing"
  2. Exclude Words:
Lets say you want to search for content about internet marketing, but you want to exclude any results that contain the term advertising.  To do this, simply use the "-" sign in front of the word you want to exclude.
    Example Search: internet marketing -advertising
  3. Site Specific Search:
Often, you want to search a specific website for content that matches a certain phrase.  Even if the site doesn’t support a built-in search feature, you can use Google to search the site for your term. Simply use the "site:somesite.com" modifier.
    Example: "internet marketing" site:www.smallbusinesshub.com
  4. Similar Words and Synonyms:
Let’s say you want to include a word in your search, but want to include results that contain similar words or synonyms.  To do this, use the "~" in front of the word.
    Example: "internet marketing" ~professional
  5. Specific Document Types:
If you’re looking to find results that are of a specific type, you can use the modifier "filetype:".  For example, you might want to find only PowerPoint presentations related to internet marketing.
    Example: "internet marketing" filetype:ppt
  6. This OR That:
By default, when you do a search, Google will include all the terms specified in the search.  If you are looking for any one of one or more terms to match, then you can use the OR operator.  (Note: The OR has to be capitalized).
    Example: internet marketing OR advertising
  7. Phone Listing:
Let’s say someone calls you on your mobile number and you don’t know who it is.  If all you have is a phone number, you can look it up on Google using the phonebook feature.
Example: phonebook:617-555-1212 (note: the provided number does not work – you’ll have to use a real number to get any results).
  8. Area Code Lookup:
If all you need to do is to look-up the area code for a phone number, just enter the 3-digit area code and Google will tell you where it’s from.
    Example: 617
  9. Numeric Ranges:
This is a rarely used, but highly useful tip.  Let’s say you want to find results that contain any of a range of numbers.  You can do this by using the X..Y modifier (in case this is hard to read, what’s between the X and Y are two periods.)  This type of search is useful for years (as shown below), prices, or anywhere where you want to provide a series of numbers.
    Example: president 1940..1950
  10. Stock (Ticker Symbol):
Just enter a valid ticker symbol as your search term and Google will give you the current financials and a quick thumb-nail chart for the stock.
    Example: GOOG
  11. Calculator:
The next time you need to do a quick calculation, instead of bringing up the Calculator applet, you can just type your expression in to Google.
    Example: 48512 * 1.02
  12. Word Definitions:
If you need to quickly look up the definition of a word or phrase, simply use the "define:" command.
    Example: define:plethora
Hope this list of Google search tips proves useful in your future Google searches.  If there are any of your favorite Google expert power tips that I’ve missed, please feel free to share them in the comments.

Real English

Real english logo
Mike's an American who's been running a language school in Istres near Marseille since 1976. He's also the brains behind Real English, an ESL site that utilizes authentic and natural ESL videos of people speaking real English on streets across the globe. The lessons are all free and free-access. Here's how Mike describes the site:
This site combines ESL grammar and functions with the spontaneity provided by the people we meet casually during our filming campaigns. You will not find any actors here. All of our clips are based on people being themselves, speaking naturally and spontaneously, just like in the situations which learners will deal with when their training is finished, when they travel to English-speaking countries, or when they welcome English speakers into their homes and offices. If you're looking for authentic video material specifically designed for ESL (with exercises), Real English is a really valuable resource. Be sure to check out the New Flash Video Lessons, which you could easily miss.

BBC Learning English: The Flatmates

Flatmates logo
I first wrote about The Flatmates way back in December 2005. Over 3 years later, this BBC Learning English soap opera is still going strong. You can listen to the episodes online (all 182 are available in the archive!), or download them in mp3 format. Each episode features a quiz and a discussion page, where you can interact with other learners. Finally, a resources page provides ideas and materials (worksheets, lesson plans, posters) for using the series in class.

LearningChocolate.com is a website which aims to help children to memorize English vocabulary in an easy and efficient way, by using images, pronunciation and games. The words are divided into nearly 80 categories such as Animals, Clothing, House, Numbers, etc.

22frames: Captioned Videos

The web offers a world of quality videos for our enjoyment and enlightenment. However, for learners of English some videos can be difficult to understand. Captioned videos are an answer. The problem is they are generally scattered and/or mixed with all other videos across the Internet. Until now, there was no central place to easily and reliably search for captioned videos across multiple video hosts. 22frames was built, in part, to provide such a place.
Although not originally created with language learners in mind, 22frames now has an ESL section with videos which illustrate specific examples of idioms and slang.

VOA Learning English YouTube Channel

Voice of America Learning English is a news and information service used by English learners and teachers worldwide. Reports are written in VOA Special English, which is read one-third slower than regular English.
VOA Special English has its own YouTube channel, where you can find over 500 videos. This recent report about using the internet and social media to find a job gives a good idea of what to expect.
COMMENT
The subtitles are very useful, but I'm not really sure about the slower delivery. Shouldn't learners be getting used to hearing English spoken at normal speed? What do you think?
